Famous Volcano Mount Vesuvius

By travelshub at 2010-10-26 05:30:55
In this modern day, two million people live in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, one of the most sinister of famous volcanoes. This active mountain has exploded more than fifty times since its momentous eruption in 79 A.D. That eruption buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. If you're staying in Naples, it's easy to get to Mount Vesuvius in your hire car, and it will only take you about 45 minutes to drive there. Take the A3 motorway towards Salerno and follow it until you have passed through the toll station at Torre del Greco. Leave the motorway at this exit and turn left to drive under the motorway bridge. Drive along the Via Boscocatene and the Via B. Cozzolino, and then follow the signs for Vesuvio.Italy's Mt. Vesuvius, the greatest activity center of the volcanoes in Europe, had killed over 2000 lives in 79 A.D. The city of Pompeii had been turned to ashes and got buried by the volcanic eruption of this Mt. Vesuvius. Though, it is now an inactive volcanic piece - enough to be called an extinct - the volcano showed a variety of occurring apart from the discharge of lava - like the volcanic bombs and blinding smokes. Thus, Mt. Vesuvius is one of the world famous volcanoes.

The crater of Vesuvius stands 1,282 meters above sea level, 230 meters deep, and has a diameter of about 650 meters. Pliny's uncle, the naturalist Pliny the Elder, was in charge of area warships, but he turned his fleet to rescuing residents and died. When you finally reach the edge of the crater, you will be bewildered at its size.Molten rock, or magma, to use its proper geological name for a body of molten rock found at depth, exists under pressure deep within the Earth. When overlaying solid rocks provide a channel, perhaps because of the constantly occurring internal adjustments of the surrounding rocks, the magma may escape to move upward to regions of lower pressure until eventually emerging at the surface, acquiring the new name: lava.

Mount Pinatubo on the island of Luzon in the Philippines blew up in 1991. Mud, rock, and hot ash buried the homes of 80,000 people who had been evacuated from the area only hours before the explosion. The Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia exploded in 1985, melting the mountain's snow cap and creating a gigantic mudflow that entombed 22,000 people living in the valleys directly below the mountain.Several mystery religions existed before the Hellenistic era. Their better organized period began when the Romans imposed peace upon the Mediterranean world. The mysteries at Eleusis near Athens lasted for a thousand years; and there is reason to believe that they changed little during that long period. It is important to realise that, because of the popularity of the City, it also has a high crime rate for pickpockets. Use a hotel safe for all of your valuables and never take out all of your money or passports when you go out: just carry what you need
